Slavery is often considered to be a thing of the past, yet modern-day human traffickers are generating billions of dollars both internationally and in the United States through the exploitation of men, women, and children.  The number of human trafficking victims in the world today is estimated to be anywhere between 25 million and 40 million. Across the United States, law enforcement agencies are encountering trafficking victims of all ages, genders, and nationalities at an alarming rate. But the successful investigation and prosecution of these complex cases remain elusive.

PERF’s conference on August 5 will focus on the types of multidisciplinary approaches that are essential to combating human trafficking. The meeting will bring together law enforcement leaders, researchers, government and non-profit leaders, and other subject-matter experts. The purpose is to better understand the nature and scope of human trafficking and to share new ideas and promising practices aimed at disrupting traffickers and their networks, providing victim-centered care, and successfully prosecuting more cases.  Conference topics will include:

  • Human Trafficking Defined: What are the typologies of trafficking and what does the data tell us about the problem?
  • Training: Promising practices in educating officers on how to identify indicators of human trafficking and more effectively interview and interact with victims
  • Investigating and Prosecuting Traffickers: Barriers to investigating and prosecuting these cases, plus innovative technologies and interagency collaborations that are proving successful
  • Victim Services: How to provide support to victims throughout the investigative and prosecutorial process and leverage community-based resources

Who Should Attend

PERF invites police chiefs, sheriffs, and other law enforcement leaders to attend this meeting. Additionally, if your department is part of a human trafficking task force or partners with other local organizations, particularly victim service providers, we welcome their attendance as well.  Researchers, non-profit leaders, and social services providers also are encouraged to attend.
