Schedule

The conference will begin Wednesday evening with PERF’s welcome reception and will continue until Friday at noon. The schedule is below, and more details will be added in the coming months:

Wednesday, April 15

  • Noon – 5:00 p.m.: Meeting registration
  • 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.: PERF Board Welcome Reception (Location TBD)

Thursday, April 16

  • 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Town Hall Meeting
At the Thursday Town Hall, we’ll start with a celebration of PERF’s 50th anniversary. In 1976, ten police chiefs formed an organization that was not afraid to challenge conventional thinking and research the profession. We’ll take a look back at the organization’s history and bring out some special guests who have helped shape our first 50 years.
Then we’ll discuss the following:
  • Innovative ways agencies are using artificial intelligence and other ways this transformative technology is impacting policing
  • The large decreases in murder, violent crime, and property crime
  • Challenges posed by increased federal immigration enforcement
  • The continued decline in drug overdose deaths
  • Recent research on officer mortality threats
  • Initial findings from PERF’s project on field training
  • A preview of PERF’s new training program to prepare the next generation of investigative supervisors
  • An update on PERF’s ICAT training program
We’ll also present our Leadership Award and Gary P. Hayes Award. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

  • 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.: Town Hall Reception at The Deck, Sheraton Grand Hotel

Friday, April 17

  • 8:30 a.m. – noon: Panel sessions
On Friday morning, there will be two sessions:
  • CNN chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst John Miller, who previously served as a senior NYPD, LAPD, and FBI official, will lead a discussion titled “The World in Crisis—Is This the New Normal?” He’ll touch on recent high-profile incidents, including the December mass shooting at Brown University; the winter federal immigration enforcement surge in Minneapolis; the disappearance of Today show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother; the October heist at the Louvre; attacks on state politicians in Minneapolis, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and President Donald Trump; and the assassinations of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and political commentator Charlie Kirk.
  • LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell will present on his agency’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympic Games, including the challenge of countering the threat posed by malicious drones.
Breakfast will be provided.
