Senior Program Assistant


The Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), a nonprofit research and policy organization based in Washington, DC. As the leading organization that develops national policy, research, training, and technical assistance to improve policing, PERF is at the forefront of police reform, innovation, and best practices. 

PERF focuses on critical issues in policing, such as police use of force, new technologies in policing, violent crime trends, officer safety, victim issues, biased policing, evidence-based policing strategies, performance measurement, and community policing. PERF has earned a national reputation for identifying emerging trends and developing best practices.

We are seeking a Program Assistant who will help plan PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) program and other professional development programs. Over the past 30 years, SMIP has become the premier program for senior law enforcement to develop and hone their leadership and management skills. PERF is looking to expand its training capacity and the Program Assistant will play an integral role in this effort.



Position responsibilities include assisting the Program Manager plan and administer PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP). Duties will include organizing and monitoring program logistics, maintaining project files and registration databases, and drafting reports and updates. The successful candidate will help the SMIP Program Manager and other PERF staff plan and facilitate the training on-site. Other tasks may include contributing to survey development and dissemination, fielding incoming information requests, processing expense vouchers, monitoring project budgets, and coordinating travel for training and events.



Candidates interested in the assistant position are required to have a bachelor’s degree. Qualified candidates must have excellent verbal, written, organizational and analytical skills. Applicants should have an ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of and practitioner experience in the substantive area of policing is a plus. Applicants with experience working on executive development training programs are also a plus.

Candidates should be dynamic team members who are able to work constructively within a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Demonstrated skills in time management, personal organization, and setting priorities are required in order to meet goals related to projects and administrative tasks.
