Candidates for the position of Chief of Police are required to possess a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public or business administration, or a related field.  A master’s degree is highly desirable, as is law-enforcement experience at an institution of higher education.  Candidates must have a minimum of fifteen (15) years of law enforcement experience, including at least four (4) years of management and administrative responsibility at the command level (Lieutenant or above). Possession of a California POST basic certificate or have the ability to obtain a California POST certificate within one year is required; possession of a California POST management certificate is preferred, as is completion of the FBI National Academy, California POST Command College, the California Police Chiefs Executive Leadership Institute, and/or PERF's Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP).
