A national search is underway to attract an experienced police executive to serve as the next the Chief of Police for the Raleigh Police Department (RPD). The City of Raleigh is the capital and the second largest city in the state of North Carolina, with a population of about 475,000. RPD endeavors to make Raleigh one of the safest cities in America by continually advancing strategies designed to prevent crime and engage the community. The next Chief of Police will lead a major city police department that is currently allotted 793 full-time sworn employees and 108 civilian staff who perform duties in five divisions. The Chief is appointed by and reports to the City Manager. Candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in public administration or a related field with a minimum of 10 years of significant management and supervisory experience. However, any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job is qualifying. A master’s degree is preferred. Qualified candidates will clearly exemplify the City’s organizational values of responsiveness, integrity, respect, collaboration, honesty, diversity, stewardship, and initiative. Advanced skills in project management, planning, and formulating strategies and policies in response to emergent technological opportunities and challenges will be essential.
