POLICE CHIEF 

The Metropolitan Council, serving the outstanding Twin Cities region in Minnesota, is accepting applications from qualified individuals for the position of Police Chief of the Metropolitan Transit Police Department (MTPD). The Chief provides leadership for a full-service police department of 170 full-time and 60 part-time sworn peace officers that addresses all aspects of crime and public safety on Metro Transit property. This includes buses, light rail and commuter trains, facilities and rights-of-way in the seven counties and 181 communities in the Twin Cities region, encompassing nearly 3,000 square miles with a population of nearly 3-million people. The Metropolitan Council is seeking a Chief of Police who can be a positive role model and provide solid leadership to the officers of the Metropolitan Transit Police Department and who will be able to instill public trust and confidence in that agency. 

Applicants for this position should possess a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience with at least 3 years of command-level experience (Captain or higher) in a police department of equivalent size and characteristics and a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, police administration, public/business administration or closely related field from an accredited college or university. Applicants should also have significant knowledge of urban police systems; the ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with system stakeholders, political leaders, other municipal law-enforcement agencies, and community representatives; the ability to develop, inspire, motivate, mentor, and challenge subordinate personnel to achieve their highest level of job performance and advancement; and the ability to foster and maintain a high level of professional and ethical conduct and public service among members of the MTPD. The Police Chief reports directly to the General Manager of Metro Transit. 

Advanced management training from the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, Southern Police Institute, PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP), or the equivalent is preferred. Candidates must possess excellent written and oral communication skills; a strong commitment to diversity and quality-based police service; and a desire to make the MTPD a police agency second to none among its peers.
