 Indiana State University is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police.  The Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police is responsible for the development, implementation and coordination of all aspects of campus safety.  Work involves the responsibility for the effective operation of the police department through planning, organizing, directing, and participating in its activities; responsibility for promoting the physical safety of employees and students; traffic and parking services; and responsibility for assuring regulatory compliance as required by federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police will have direct managerial and supervisory responsibilities over all operational areas including vehicular and bike patrol, security, investigations, threat assessment, Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, training, dignitary protection, and dispatch center.  ISUPD has 36 employees, including 25 sworn law enforcement officers and is IACLEA accredited.

The responsibilities and expectations of the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police are as follows:

  • Plan, organize, direct, and participate in the programs and activities of the campus police unit to create a safe and secure environment for all students, faculty, staff, visitors, and assets of the University. 
  • Ensure officers receive appropriate training and embrace a community policing philosophy.  Build a team approach and student/customer service focus in the delivery of all law enforcement, security, safety, and related work.
  • Assume accountability for knowledge of and compliance with Federal, State, Local, as well as University policies, rules and regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Participate in Emergency Management Team operations.  Provide leadership regarding emergency preparedness, response, and recovery planning operations.  Work closely with University administration responsible for disseminating information to the media and campus populations.
  • Serve as liaison and foster collaborative working relationships between university police and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. 
  • Implement strategic priorities in patrol, investigations, crime prevention, event management, traffic control/enforcement, student crisis, and critical incident response. 
  • Work with and support the campus student conduct system.
  • Maintains knowledge and familiarity with Federal and State laws applicable to campus public safety including, but not limited to FERPA, the Clery Act, and Title IX laws and regulations.
  • Attend campus and other community organization meetings, as necessary, to explain and promote the activities and functions of the department and establish positive working relationships with various internal and external groups.



  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible law enforcement background with command experience.
  • Applicants should be prepared for a background check that includes; fingerprint/criminal history check, driver’s license check, credit history check, psychological assessment, physical fitness assessment, drug screening, and employment history.
  • The successful candidate must possess an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certification or attain certification as a condition of employment within one year from date of hire.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Excellent written/oral communication and presentation skills.


  • Law enforcement experience at a residential university.
  • Experience working with and supporting community policing operations.
  • Awareness of diversity (demographic, mental health, ADA, and others); understanding and appreciation for the college campus culture.
  • Understanding use of technology and social media; knowledge of law enforcement records systems and traffic/parking administration.

Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience.
